I remember when I was just a little squirt, I went with my dad into a big shopping center in Barcelona(”El corte ingles” if I’m not mistaken), and I got one of the best gifts I could have got back then. Since it was close to my Birthday, I received a Game Boy advance, and together with it, both version of Pokemon: Red and Blue. I can’t remember spending as much time playing a game, as I spent playing Pokemon Red. I used to love that catchy tune and those old graphics. I can’t say I was an avid fan of the TV series, but I really loved this game. If you take my opinion, those initial games where the best of the entire series, and because of that, I will try and write a weekly walkthrough for them. So let’s power up our Game Boys, and tune in to that great tune that we used to listen to.

Oh the good old Title Screen, so red, so vicious, so pixelated. Ouch, excuse me, but I got caught up by nostalgia. It seems that professor Oak is the first one to greet me. Hi there professor, whats up? My name? Hm.. seems he doesn’t remember me, oh well. The name I will choose for this walkthrough is Diaper!. It seems I also have a rival. I wonder who can it be. I’ll just name him Guest. Don’t know if this really needed a FAQ, but I really wanted to write all my impressions. Anyway, here is where our real walkthrough will start.
PALLET TOWN

This is where you will start. Just walk downstairs, and your mom will tell you Prof. Oak is looking for you. After exiting the house, and looking around you notice that Prof. Oak is nowhere to be found. No reason to hang around right? So head North to leave the town. As soon as you enter the tall grass, Prof. Oak will “magically” appear and comes to “rescue you”.

After telling you to be careful because pokemon’s live in tall grass, he takes you back to his lab, where you can spend the following 30 seconds hearing Guest(Garry) complaining about how much of a *will not say bad words on the blog* he is. But all that waiting will pay off, since you will be able to pick your first pokemon. Ha Guest!, I got to pick first! Now, the pokemon I will choose is Charmander, and old time favorite of mine. The line up, from left to right is:
- Charmander
- Squirtle
- Bulbasaur
The best choise would have been Bulbasaur, since he could easily take down the first two gym masters. Ogh well, I’m a masochist so… what ever makes me happy
.

But now, it’s Guest’s turn to choose one. We all know that he won’t choose bulbasaur. As you try to leave, Gary will challenge you to a fight. Don’t worry, even though he has a water type pokemon, all he can do right now is do normal attacks. Just keep on attacking him in order to win. After beating him, you gain level 6. It’s time to leave town, so head up on route 1, but don’t forget to take your potion from the PC. Also, be sure to chat with the first lad you encounter, hence he will give you another potion. The only 2 pokemons you will encounter this route are Ratata’s and Pidgey’s. Be sure to fight them all. Build your pokemon up to level 9. It should take you about 5 minutes to do so. Then head up to the first city, and enter the PokeCenter in order to heal your Charmander.

Afterwords be sure to go to the mart, where you will receive a package for Prof. Oak. Be a good lad and pick it up. Time to head back home! After handing the package to Oak, Guest will show up, asking what was the ‘thing’ the professor had to ask him. It’s time to get your pokedex. After leaving the lab, head over to Guest’s house, in order to get the Town Map from his sister. Now head towards Viridian City! Heal your pokemon’s once again, and head back to the mart in order to buy Antidotes and Pokeballs, since you will need them troughout the next area. Head north, and go towards Viridian Forest. Don’t bother catching any pokemon right now. Save your pokeballs for Caterpie, Weedle and Pickachu. Don’t try to catch a Metapod or a Kakuna, since they will brake out of the pokeball often. Instead, train your 2 new insect-type pokemons, and evolve them, just be sure to at least get Butterfly to level 12, so he can learn confusion. Keep in mind that our starting Pokemon is Charmander, and we start with a slight disadvantage. Anyway, here’s the build I used to take on Brock:

Notice I leveled up and evolved Charmander into Charmeleon. I will use him to take out Geodude and some part of Onix’s life. My strategy is:
- Use Charmeleon to take down Geodude
- Use Charmeleon to lower a part of Onyx’s life
- Use Butterfree’’s confusion on Onyx
- When Butterfree’s HP will be low, I will switch him with Pickachu, and heal Butterfree.
- Again, if Pickachu will faint, and Butterfree will have a low HP, I will switch him with Kakuna, and heal him again.
- I get the medal from Brock
Let’s see how that went shall we?

Pokemon Red: Brock wants to fight
Just talked to Brock, and I started the fight. Wish me luck! [Man it sounds weird].

Everything is going just like planed. Let’s see what happens next.

As you can see, Onyx has the advantage, but this is going better then expected. Buterfree could take down Onyx in one attack. I could switch Charmeleon with Kakuna in order to heal Charmeleon just for the sake of it.

Whats this? Charmeleon was all I needed to take down Brock! I did have a lucky crit but hey, you could 2. And don’t forget, you also have Butterfree there, just in case.

Taaddaa! I got the first badge from Brock! Well it wasn’t hard now, wasn’t it? And think of it this way, Charrizzard will come in handy later on, when you get to go to the Pokemon League. Well that’s all for now. Hopefully next week I will write the following chapter for this old and amazing adventure.

amazing how these games attract people again. I saw that some of my colleagues are playing on their phones exactly the same version.
